And the singer Spencer Day is previewing his upcoming album, “Broadway by Day,” on his current North American tour.
Discussing the genesis of her and her sister’s show, Ann Hampton Callaway said they “were talking about what we wanted to create next after our hit shows, ‘Sibling Revelry’ and ‘Boom,’ and thought it would be exciting to join forces as two Tony nominees, and create a night focused on our love of Broadway musicals. We thought, ‘Let’s Do Broadway The Call-away!’”
Asked how the songs to be performed were chosen, Ann Hampton Callaway said, “Our shows always have a personal thread to them, so after trying countless different ideas with our longtime musical director, Alex Rybeck, with direction from Liz’s husband, Dan Foster, the choices and the shape started to unfold. We love collaborating together, and our arrangement ideas come from all of us. I had the idea to do a jazz funk version of ‘Lullaby of Broadway’ and wrote additional lyrics and fun harmonies for us. Liz and Alex are the medley masters, and our ‘Broadway Huge Medley’ is a hoot to do. Liz and I reminisce about our childhoods and sing songs to honor people who inspired our passion for the art form. Of course we had to do our signature songs from our Broadway roles, Liz with ‘The Story Goes On’ from Baby and me ‘Blues in the Night’ from Swing! Our first Broadway musical was Sondheim’s Company, so being lifelong fans of his shows, we have created a three-song suite of his pieces that unfolds a personal story.”
The Callaways will also pay tribute to their late mother, Shirley, whom Ann Hampton Callaway called “a beloved singer, pianist and voice teacher. We lost her recently and honor her memory with the Rogers and Hammerstein classic she loved so much, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’”
Discussing the eternal appeal of the songs she and her sister will perform, Ann Hampton Callaway said the songs’ writers, “Sondheim, Jule Styne, Stephen Schwartz, Richard Rodgers, etc, have crafted songs with unforgettable melodies and brilliant lyrics that help tell the stories of the biggest moments of our lives. Each song we are singing is a play in itself. They have the power to move, to inspire, to heal and to bring people together in these divisive times.”
In his current North American tour, Spencer Day is previewing his album, “Broadway by Day,” featuring songs from musicals by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lionel Bart, Jerry Herman and others.
